Pain Management Toolkit for Ambulatory Surgery

The Pain Management Toolkit emphasizes the critical role of effective pain management in ambulatory surgery settings to prevent adverse outcomes and facilitate recovery. Optimal strategies involve a multimodal approach, beginning with preoperative identification of high-risk patients, thorough patient education on realistic pain expectations and opioid risks, and the proactive, scheduled use of non-opioid analgesics, supplemented by procedure-specific regional anesthesia techniques and intraoperative medication use. The toolkit describes an opioid-sparing approach and judicious prescribing practices. It also covers non-pharmacological therapies which can further complement pain relief and reduce opioid reliance.
